We love comic books for the larger than life, fantastic characters, and situations depicted in them. However, when we talk about creating comic book characters, there is a certain number of possibilities existing. There is a finite number of things that can be done, superpowers, costumes and personality traits that can be given to a character without compromising on the originality. To begin with, a lot of the popular superheroes are inspired by some standard character specifications which are essential to creating vast universes. These include archers, kings of the underwater kingdoms, thieves with feline traits, armored superheroes, and magicians. These are classifications which are so vague that they can be recreated numerous time and still each new version could be vastly different from the others.
However, there would come a time when you would start taking inspiration from ideas which have already been created by others, and the characters which might be newly created would appear to be either clones or rip-offs. In fact, beyond a certain point, all the new characters would be simply redesigns of the older ones.
Therefore, seeing a “mirrored” character is not all that unusual.
At the same time, there are various ‘specific’ characters which are not common stereotypes, but, they still get “copied” in other universes, and this could be attributed to a couple of factors. In a number of cases, the creatives that work for DC or Marvel are employed on a “work for hire” basis, and they switch sides. This leads to their creating another version of the character they created previously so that they can keep narrating stories related to a character they loved. Then there are times when creators identify a popular character or superhero team from the other side and create a version which can be at par with the rival side’s character. It is not a problem limited to one side. Both DC and Marvel have indulged in such things over the years. Keeping that in mind, we present to you 10 Characters that Marvel copied from DC and vice versa.
