It would be wrong to say that Tony Stark aka Iron-Man was lost to the world before 2008. However, it is also true that he wasn’t renowned and didn’t top the favorite characters list of most fans. In fact, if we look back to the origins of the character back in 1963, Stan Lee had created Tony Stark in a fanciful bet with himself to see if he was capable of creating an utterly hateable character and pull it off (arms maker, billionaire, smarty, womanizer and least bothered about others’ opinion). Going by the words of Lee himself, his creation went on to become popular amongst diehard comic book readers. Yet, Tony Stark remained unknown to the mainstream audiences who considered him to be nothing more than a lower-end hero. They had absolutely no idea about who Tony Stark actually was.
Things turned on their head when the witty, disarmingly good looking and highly quotable Robert Downey Jr. took on the role.
Equipped with the best lines in the business, Robert Downey Jr. worked with some incredibly talented moviemakers and writers and took the Stan Lee character to an altogether different level. Aided by a constant barrage of one-liners, and a cool suit of armor, the obscenely wealthy, egoistic, business-minded Casanova was turned into one of the most popular film characters and superheroes. Not to forget, he also became the king of wit.
