7 Times Women Got A Raw Deal In The MCU

It feels that each new MCU film provides better roles for the women. This is manifested by the fact that fans loved characters like Hela, Valkyrie, Okoye, and Shuri from the recent MCU films like Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Infinity War. In Thor, we saw two powerful female warriors who enhanced the quality of the movie. Hela was a powerful villain who proved too much even for Thor. With such a large number of male heroes and villains, the time has come to see women who are formidable and have more to them than merely being accessories to the male superheroes.

However, MCU has been often unfair to the ladies, and here we look at 7 occasions that the female actors were given a raw deal in MCU.

Hope Van Dyne’s belated discovery of truth

To be the witness of a parent’s death is a huge trauma, but, how about not being aware of the secret life of the parent that led to the death. That’s what Hope Van Dyne had to face in Ant-Man. She is a strong character, expert in combat, and capable of communicating with the ants. She wanted to prove that she was good enough to use her father’s tech, but, Hank Pym denied her and hired Scott Lang. No wonder she was upset. Only at the end of the film, Hank told her about the other suit and how her mother died a hero’s death. Imagine, her father kept this hidden from her for nearly 30 years!

Nebula’s family is the reason why she became a cyborg

The second Guardians of the Galaxy movie shed some light on the upbringing of Gamora and Nebula, and it is not great. While we knew Thanos wasn’t their real father, we had no idea how terrible he had been to them. He used to make them fight each other, and the loser had to suffer. Gamora was always the victor so whenever Nebula got defeated, Thanos used to replace a part of her body with cybernetics to make her deadlier. Piece by piece, he destroyed Nebula’s humanity.

Considering the extreme abuse she suffered, it is remarkable on Nebula’s part to stay sane, and she is not wrong in being hateful especially towards Gamora. However, this shouldn’t have happened to her.

The relationship between Scarlet Witch and Vision

Wanda Maximoff aka the Scarlet Witch is one of the few powered women in MCU. She has powers like telekinetic, telepathy and a strong force. She is smarter and capable of taking on any of the Avengers. Even Ultron figured out that she could have wrecked them. Therefore, she had to have a fling with someone.

Her relationship with Vision is canon. In Age of Ultron, we saw them come close to each other as outsiders, and this turns into love. However, Wanda is a human, but, Vision is not. Therefore, it will lead to problems. In comics, her kids had disappeared, and Vision had lost his emotions. To say it simply, it is a doomed relationship and could have been given a better deal in the MCU.

The love triangle between Steve Rogers and the Carters

Steve Rogers endured an extremely long wait to meet his love, Peggy Carter.  During the years he was frozen, she didn’t waste time thinking of him. Rather, she kept working as a Strategic Scientific Reserve Agent and was the co-founder of S.H.I.E.L.D. There was no happy ending for her and Steve, but, she had a family of her own. One of them was Sharon Carter, her great-niece.

Just like Peggy, Sharon also worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. and gets attracted to Steve Rogers and even kissed him in Captain America: Civil War. However, just because someone was her role model didn’t mean that she had to make out with her lover.

Jane Foster was used and disposed of as Thor’s lover

Despite being a famous astrophysicist, Jane Foster was unlucky in love before her true love fell down from the sky. It could have been the story for a romantic comedy, but, that’s what happened in Thor. Jane is an aggressive and ambitious lady and just the way the young female scientists should be.

However, she is unceremoniously dumped from the narrative. According to Kevin Feige, they wanted Thor to be with someone “more on his level,” and that’s absurd. Jane’s technology was the reason why the bad guys were defeated in Thor: The Dark World, and she even figured out the Asgardian tech, so telling her that she wasn’t on his level is a dumb excuse. She deserved a worthy ending to her story.

Natasha Romanov’s Black Widow conversion

Natasha was trained to be a deadly mercenary in the Red Room, and we see her getting flashbacks in Age of Ultron. She has a codename, Black Widow, and she got that by being an expert killer.

To make sure that she never got distracted when on missions, Natasha was sterilized. This was a permanent surgery so despite having changed greatly Natasha’s reproductive system was not evolved. While it is not a matter of life and death to have kids for a lot of women, it is generally a matter of choice. Natasha was deprived of that choice and brainwashed. That cannot be forgiven.

Pepper Potts got powers, and then they were removed quickly

The original Iron Man movie featured Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts. She was the original lady hero from MCU to emulate, and we saw her emerge as the CEO of Stark Industries. Later in Iron-Man 3, we see Pepper getting infected by Extremis, and gets superpowers. This was exciting since she was a superhero on her own, but, briefly as her powers were taken away almost as soon as they manifested themselves.

While Extremis would have harmed her in the longer-run, there might have been a scientific way that Tony could have found to ensure her powers stayed. On the contrary, in her last appearance Pepper was about to get engaged, and that is a clichéd thing.
