Groot Of The Galaxy: Superpowers Nobody Knew Groot Had

They are the most unusual team in the Marvel Universe, but, the Guardians of the Galaxy characters like  Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket, the raccoon/squirrel weapon expert, Yondu, the blue-skinned Mohawk hair Whistler, and Star-Lord aka the cosmic Kevin Bacon, are loved by the fans.  The incredible team has some cool super-powers too. However, there is one of them who has the craziest powers of them  all, and he is called Groot.

We saw in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, how the Baby Groot stormed the world, one tiny inaudible yell at a time, and you might think you know everything about him. However, you might be stunned to know the kind of powers that the creature comprising of bark, vines and three simple words wields.

Groot can fly in space

In case you are one of those who doubts Groot’s capability to be called a superhero on his own, must not have read the Groot solo comic book from 2015. It is a light-hearted comic for all age groups and makes fans smile. In this story, Groot was on his way to rescue Rocket Racoon from a bounty hunter, but, he was distracted by some neon smoke outside his spaceship. To check what is wrong, he simply stepped out of the spacecraft and zipped towards the source of the smoke. Therefore, it is evident that Groot can survive freely in the vacuum of space.

Plasticity

Similar to Richard Reeds or Stretch Armstrong, Groot is able to stretch his limbs as he wishes and can shoot them to long distances or even turn them into different shapes. Although Groot is more of a humanoid tree trunk, he has the characteristics and structure of vines. He can modify his body in a crazy manner, but, he always reverts to his original shape after the task is done. We saw during the Guardians’ attack on the Dark Aster in the first movie when he wiped out a section of Ronan’s army on a limb.

What we don’t know is the extent to which Groot can grow his limbs. In Guardians of the Galaxy #7 in 2008, Groot seemed to extend them for miles. Therefore, despite appearing stiff as a tree, he can be incredibly elastic.

Size Manipulation

Since Groot is capable of manipulating his limbs and stretch his roots to almost infinite lengths, it is obvious that he can modify the size of his whole body. Although the Guardians of the Galaxy films show that it takes Groot time to grow from a dancing sprout into a screaming baby tree, his comic book appearances have been different.

Guardians of the Galaxy #3 (2013), showed Groot grow from a potted seed into a monstrous tree in a few seconds to help his team break free from the Spartex Royal Guard, proving that he can grow instantly. He did a similar thing in Annihilation Conquest #5 when he turbo-charged his cell growth during an assault on the Babel Spire. Once Hulk threw a Baby Groot at Thanos who expanded greatly mid-air and delivered a smackdown.

Immediate Cell Regeneration

Groot is ever willing to face the danger front on. When he became member of the Guardians initially, he was killed twice in various kamikaze missions. We have seen him getting burned, shot, pierced, cut in two, eaten up, blasted, maimed and subjected to almost every other terrible thing that one could think of. Still, he has bounced back from everything because he has a healing factor that is mighty enough to even make Wolverine envy him.

In the Guardians of the Galaxy film, we saw Groot heroically turn into a wooden roll cage and give up his life to save his teammates, and he managed to grow back in the second movie. As long as there is soil and a pot close by, Groot is literally immortal.

He can produce fully functional tiny clones

Could there be anything better than the Baby Groot? What about a whole army of Baby Groots? Just imagine the fun! You might be surprised to know that among Groot’s powers is an ability to create multiple miniature versions of himself.  The interesting thing is that all these clones come with an independent mind and all the powers that the original Groot has.

In Annihilation #4 (2011), a squad of clown assassins attacks Groot and Rocket Racoon. Despite their overwhelming numbers, Groot cleverly raises a mini army of Groots, each clone taking charge of a clown. Imagine, a crowd of tiny Groots taking control of crazy murderous clowns?

Unbelievable Cosmic Powers

Nobody jokes around with the Power Cosmic, but, if you are interested in realizing your full potential, then you can try drawing from the Black Vortex. This strange object, created by the Celestials, allows a user to access “impossible cosmic power.” In Cyclops #12 (2015). Groot along with Iceman and Cyclops get stuck inside a flying alien space whale, and they figure out that their best option to escape is to hand themselves over to the Black Vortex. It resulted in Groot turning into a cosmic being with all the incredible powers. While Groot’s newly acquired powers were eventually taken away, he was among the strongest beings in the universe for a few issues. His other regular superpowers were also multiplied to cosmic levels, and he acquired powers like the ability to transporting himself to anywhere in the universe.
